How has crime changed in South Dakota since 1985?

Police in South Dakota reported about 327 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2025 (U.S.: 329), down from a high of 489 in 2020, and 1,430 property crimes in 2025 (U.S.: 1,552), down from a high of 3,233 in 1994. There's no figure for 1985–1989 and 1997–1999, when police departments covering fewer than 3 in 4 of its people reported a full year. Rates count only the agencies that reported.
