How has crime changed in New York since 1985?

Police in New York reported about 368 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2025 (U.S.: 329), down from a high of 1,192 in 1990, and 1,567 property crimes in 2025 (U.S.: 1,552), down from a high of 5,314 in 1988. There's no figure for 2021, when police departments covering fewer than 3 in 4 of its people reported a full year. Rates count only the agencies that reported. Choose another state to compare.
