How has crime changed in Illinois since 1985?

Police in Illinois reported about 258 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2025 (U.S.: 329), down from a high of 1,002 in 1991, and 1,556 property crimes in 2025 (U.S.: 1,552), down from a high of 5,121 in 1991. There's no figure for 1995–2009 and 2021, when police departments covering fewer than 3 in 4 of its people reported a full year. Rates count only the agencies that reported.
