When will Social Security's trust funds run out?

The 2026 Trustees Report projects that Social Security's combined trust funds will run out in 2034. Their reserves peaked at $2.9 trillion in 2020 and were $2.6 trillion at the end of 2025. After that, taxes coming in would still pay about 83% of scheduled benefits unless Congress acts. Years from 2026 are the Trustees' middle (intermediate) projection, in dollars of each year; the retirement fund alone runs out in late 2032.
