How much US debt does China own?
Mainland China held $618 billion of U.S. Treasury securities in July 2026, less than half its peak of $1.32 trillion in November 2013 and about where it was in 2008. In March 2000 it held $59 billion. China may also hold Treasuries through other countries' custodians, such as Belgium's, which this count can't see; these are Treasury's TIC estimates at the end of each month.
