Who owns the value of U.S. homes?

In the second quarter of 2026, the next 40% of U.S. households by wealth held 46.6% of the value of the homes households live in, more than any other group. The wealthiest 1% held 13.4%, the next 9% held 30.3% and the bottom 50% held 9.7%. This is the market value of owner-occupied homes and land, before subtracting mortgages; homes rented out to others count as businesses. Groups are ranked by net worth: what households own minus what they owe. The Fed estimates each quarter by combining its Financial Accounts with its Survey of Consumer Finances, taken every three years, so the newest quarters are estimates that get revised.
