Which states get the most NIH research money?
California's universities, hospitals and companies received $5.2 billion of NIH research funding in fiscal 2025, the most of any state, followed by New York ($3.5 billion) and Massachusetts ($3.4 billion). Wyoming received the least, $11.6 million. A project counts where the organization leading it is; Maryland's total leaves out NIH's own labs in Bethesda.
