How these figures are measured

  • Typical pay is the median: half the workers earn more and half earn less. Pay is before taxes and leaves out the self-employed.
  • Pay by job group is from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey of employers, for May 2025. It counts full-time and part-time workers; BLS turns hourly pay into a year's at 2,080 hours (40 hours a week, every week). Each group mixes many jobs, so pay for one job can differ a lot from its group's.
  • The typical full-time worker's pay is from the Current Population Survey of households: usual weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers in the second quarter of 2026.
  • Neither figure is adjusted for where you live, how long you've worked or your hours.
