{"chart":{"slug":"nih-research-funding-per-year","title":"How much does NIH spend on medical research each year?","takeaway":"NIH funded $42.2 billion of research projects in fiscal 2025, up from $27.8 billion in 2012, before adjusting for inflation. The most in a year was $43.6 billion, in fiscal 2023; the dip in 2013 was the federal budget cut known as sequestration. These are the projects NIH lists in RePORTER, grants and its own labs; NIH's full budget, which also pays for buildings and running the agency, is larger.","topic":"Medical research","chart_type":"line","ranking":false,"x_label":"Fiscal year","y_label":"NIH funding (dollars)","unit":"dollars","points_count":14,"source":{"name":"NIH RePORTER (National Institutes of Health)","url":"https://reporter.nih.gov/"},"license":{"name":"Public domain (U.S. government work)","url":"https://www.usa.gov/government-copyright"},"data_as_of":"2025-09-30","updated_at":"2026-10-17T18:50:41.521Z","url":"https://chart.ly/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year","api_url":"https://chart.ly/api/v1/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year","csv_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year/data.csv","image_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year/image.png","embed_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year/embed","credit":"NIH RePORTER (National Institutes of Health), via Chartly (https://chart.ly/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year)","credit_html":"NIH RePORTER (National Institutes of Health), via \u003ca href=\"https://chart.ly/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year\"\u003eChartly\u003c/a\u003e","average_label":null,"zero_axis":true,"data":[{"label":"2012","value":27808835719},{"label":"2013","value":26305608282},{"label":"2014","value":27837957741},{"label":"2015","value":27261534084},{"label":"2016","value":29203858546},{"label":"2017","value":30742592883},{"label":"2018","value":32904481035},{"label":"2019","value":35507502698},{"label":"2020","value":39734139364},{"label":"2021","value":41176067019},{"label":"2022","value":42278811528},{"label":"2023","value":43614231327},{"label":"2024","value":42725045164},{"label":"2025","value":42160254206}],"annotations":[]},"docs":"https://chart.ly/developers","terms":"Free to use with credit: wherever you show or quote a chart's data, name Chartly with a link to that chart's url (each chart's credit line does both) and credit its source as its license asks.","credit":"NIH RePORTER (National Institutes of Health), via Chartly (https://chart.ly/charts/nih-research-funding-per-year)"}
