{"chart":{"slug":"how-us-wealth-is-divided","title":"How is U.S. household wealth divided?","takeaway":"In the second quarter of 2026, U.S. households held $186 trillion in wealth. The wealthiest 1% held 32.5% of it, the next 9% held 36.4%, the next 40% held 28.8% and the bottom 50% held 2.3%. In 1989 the shares were 22.8%, 38.0%, 35.7% and 3.5%. Wealth here is net worth: what households own (homes, stocks and mutual funds, pensions and retirement accounts, private businesses, cars and other belongings, bank deposits) minus what they owe (mortgages, credit cards, student and car loans). The Fed estimates each quarter by combining its Financial Accounts with its Survey of Consumer Finances, taken every three years, so the newest quarters are estimates that get revised.","topic":"Wealth","chart_type":"bar","ranking":false,"x_label":"Households, by wealth","y_label":"Share of household wealth, %","unit":"percent","points_count":4,"source":{"name":"Federal Reserve Board, Distributional Financial Accounts","url":"https://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/z1/dataviz/dfa/"},"license":{"name":"Public domain (Federal Reserve Board; cite the Board as the source)","url":"https://www.federalreserve.gov/disclaimer.htm"},"data_as_of":"2026-06-30","updated_at":"2026-09-27T01:38:39.620Z","url":"https://chart.ly/charts/how-us-wealth-is-divided","api_url":"https://chart.ly/api/v1/charts/how-us-wealth-is-divided","csv_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/how-us-wealth-is-divided/data.csv","image_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/how-us-wealth-is-divided/image.png","embed_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/how-us-wealth-is-divided/embed","average_label":null,"zero_axis":true,"data":[{"label":"Top 1%","value":32.5},{"label":"Next 9%","value":36.4},{"label":"Next 40%","value":28.8},{"label":"Bottom 50%","value":2.3}],"annotations":[]},"docs":"https://chart.ly/developers","credit":"Federal Reserve Board, Distributional Financial Accounts, via Chartly (https://chart.ly/charts/how-us-wealth-is-divided)"}
