{"chart":{"slug":"exoplanets-discovered-per-year","title":"How many planets outside our solar system are discovered each year?","takeaway":"Astronomers confirmed 246 new planets around other stars in 2025. The first were found in 1992, and the count leaped in 2014 and 2016 (872 and 1,504), when NASA's Kepler team confirmed hundreds of its candidates at once. The archive counts a planet in the year its discovery was published and keeps adding late confirmations, so recent years can still rise.","topic":"Space","chart_type":"line","ranking":false,"x_label":"Year of discovery","y_label":"Confirmed exoplanets discovered","unit":null,"points_count":34,"source":{"name":"NASA Exoplanet Archive, Planetary Systems Composite Data","url":"https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu/cgi-bin/TblView/nph-tblView?app=ExoTbls\u0026config=PSCompPars"},"license":{"name":"Public domain (NASA data); this research has made use of the NASA Exoplanet Archive, operated by Caltech under contract with NASA","url":"https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu/docs/acknowledge.html"},"data_as_of":"2025-12-31","updated_at":"2026-11-04T17:24:34.285Z","url":"https://chart.ly/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year","api_url":"https://chart.ly/api/v1/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year","csv_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year/data.csv","image_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year/image.png","embed_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year/embed","credit":"NASA Exoplanet Archive, Planetary Systems Composite Data, via Chartly (https://chart.ly/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year)","credit_html":"NASA Exoplanet Archive, Planetary Systems Composite Data, via \u003ca href=\"https://chart.ly/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year\"\u003eChartly\u003c/a\u003e","average_label":null,"zero_axis":true,"data":[{"label":"1992","value":2},{"label":"1993","value":0},{"label":"1994","value":1},{"label":"1995","value":1},{"label":"1996","value":6},{"label":"1997","value":1},{"label":"1998","value":6},{"label":"1999","value":13},{"label":"2000","value":16},{"label":"2001","value":12},{"label":"2002","value":29},{"label":"2003","value":22},{"label":"2004","value":27},{"label":"2005","value":36},{"label":"2006","value":32},{"label":"2007","value":52},{"label":"2008","value":62},{"label":"2009","value":87},{"label":"2010","value":93},{"label":"2011","value":141},{"label":"2012","value":144},{"label":"2013","value":128},{"label":"2014","value":872},{"label":"2015","value":155},{"label":"2016","value":1504},{"label":"2017","value":152},{"label":"2018","value":308},{"label":"2019","value":194},{"label":"2020","value":234},{"label":"2021","value":564},{"label":"2022","value":367},{"label":"2023","value":323},{"label":"2024","value":260},{"label":"2025","value":246}],"annotations":[]},"docs":"https://chart.ly/developers","terms":"Free to use with credit: wherever you show or quote a chart's data, name Chartly with a link to that chart's url (each chart's credit line does both) and credit its source as its license asks.","credit":"NASA Exoplanet Archive, Planetary Systems Composite Data, via Chartly (https://chart.ly/charts/exoplanets-discovered-per-year)"}
