{"chart":{"slug":"asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon","title":"How many asteroids pass closer to Earth than the Moon each year?","takeaway":"Astronomers know of 189 asteroid flybys closer than the Moon (about 384,000 km away) in 2025, against about 20 a year in 2007 to 2009. Asteroids aren't passing more often: better sky surveys now spot many more of the small ones, most only a few meters across. The counts include flybys worked out for earlier years from asteroids found later.","topic":"Space","chart_type":"line","ranking":false,"x_label":"Year","y_label":"Known asteroid flybys closer than the Moon","unit":null,"points_count":26,"source":{"name":"NASA/JPL Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), SBDB Close Approach Data","url":"https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/"},"license":{"name":"Public domain (NASA data); credit NASA/JPL-Caltech CNEOS","url":"https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/jpl-image-use-policy"},"data_as_of":"2025-12-31","updated_at":"2026-10-17T18:50:40.324Z","url":"https://chart.ly/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon","api_url":"https://chart.ly/api/v1/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon","csv_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon/data.csv","image_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon/image.png","embed_url":"https://chart.ly/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon/embed","credit":"NASA/JPL Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), SBDB Close Approach Data, via Chartly (https://chart.ly/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon)","credit_html":"NASA/JPL Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), SBDB Close Approach Data, via \u003ca href=\"https://chart.ly/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon\"\u003eChartly\u003c/a\u003e","average_label":null,"zero_axis":true,"data":[{"label":"2000","value":1},{"label":"2001","value":2},{"label":"2002","value":2},{"label":"2003","value":5},{"label":"2004","value":13},{"label":"2005","value":7},{"label":"2006","value":12},{"label":"2007","value":18},{"label":"2008","value":21},{"label":"2009","value":20},{"label":"2010","value":25},{"label":"2011","value":32},{"label":"2012","value":23},{"label":"2013","value":24},{"label":"2014","value":33},{"label":"2015","value":27},{"label":"2016","value":53},{"label":"2017","value":58},{"label":"2018","value":81},{"label":"2019","value":86},{"label":"2020","value":114},{"label":"2021","value":160},{"label":"2022","value":143},{"label":"2023","value":115},{"label":"2024","value":145},{"label":"2025","value":189}],"annotations":[]},"docs":"https://chart.ly/developers","terms":"Free to use with credit: wherever you show or quote a chart's data, name Chartly with a link to that chart's url (each chart's credit line does both) and credit its source as its license asks.","credit":"NASA/JPL Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), SBDB Close Approach Data, via Chartly (https://chart.ly/charts/asteroid-flybys-closer-than-the-moon)"}
